In a significant security operation, three individuals with ties to the Islamic State (ISIS) were apprehended on Wednesday in Morocco and Spain, as announced by the Moroccan anti-terrorism police. This joint operation highlights the ongoing collaboration between the two nations in combating terrorism.
The Special Forces of the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST) detained two suspects in Tangier, located in northern Morocco, while Spanish police arrested the leader of this terrorist cell in Mallorca. This information was detailed in a statement released by the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ), disseminated through the official Moroccan news agency MAP.
Initial investigations conducted by Moroccan authorities suggest that the two detained individuals are involved in the financial and logistical support of ISIS fighters operating in the Sahel region and Somalia. Furthermore, the leader of this cell is suspected of having orchestrated plans for a terrorist attack in Spain, employing what is known as the 'modus operandi' of individual terrorism, according to the same statement.
The cooperative security efforts between Morocco and Spain have resulted in the dismantling of over 30 terrorist cells since 2014. This collaboration has been instrumental in addressing significant threats and thwarting dangerous plots that could compromise national security in both countries.
