With over a decade of experience, the Lápices Moteros initiative returns this year with the same altruistic goal and renewed enthusiasm. Organized by the Las Moreras Neighborhood Association in Talavera, this edition of the Lápices Solidarios project is in collaboration with the NGO Camino al Sur. This initiative was conceived by the leadership of the Talavera association with the intention of carrying out a charitable and educational action aimed at schoolchildren in southern Morocco.
The primary aim is to assist by providing educational materials, children's footwear, toys, and computer equipment to schools and educational institutions, as stated in a press release. This project is developed without any profit motive, with all collected funds being directly allocated to the costs associated with implementing the initiative.
Lápices Moteros embodies both adventure and solidarity. The fundamental goal is to collect materials through individual contributions, foundations, and other organizations. Hence, collaboration from businesses and individuals is crucial to successfully executing this project, providing necessary materials, resources, and funds for this purpose.
Simultaneously, activities are organized to raise funds to cover the transportation expenses of the collected materials from the centers to southern Morocco (Merzouga). The materials will be transported to Morocco personally by participants, who will carry them on their motorcycles and support vehicles to the delivery point, with assistance from the NGO Camino al Sur (www.caminosur.org), especially in areas affected by the earthquake in the High Atlas.
To maximize assistance, the collection of materials by project members will take place until May 1st. Donations from collaborating companies will only include new materials purchased or donated at their establishments. Once all donated materials are collected, the second phase of the Lápices Moteros project begins, involving the actual transportation to the schools in southern Morocco (Merzouga) between May 9th and 17th.
The project currently comprises ten friends, nine motorcycles, and one support vehicle, with the goal of transporting around 1,000 kilograms of materials to southern Morocco. The participants recognize that motorcycles have less cargo capacity than other vehicles but are more eye-catching than other forms of transport. With the help of support vehicles, they are optimistic about achieving the target of 1,000 kilograms of materials.
Ultimately, they remind us that the goal is not just to collaborate and deliver materials but also to raise awareness about the need for solidarity with the children of the neighboring country.
