Latest Developments in the Case of the President of the Regional Council and Fake Invoices

On July 10, 2026, the Criminal Court in Fes postponed the hearing concerning the network of fake invoices and shell companies involving the President of the Taza Regional Council, who is also a prominent member of the National Rally of Independents party, along with several other defendants, until July 17 of this month.

This decision came after the defendants insisted on their right to legal representation, which was absent for the second consecutive session due to an ongoing strike by lawyers protesting a new law regulating the profession. In the previous session, the Moroccan government, represented by the Prime Minister, presented its civil claims against the defendants, demanding compensation exceeding 50 million dirhams, specifically targeting the Baaziz brothers alone.

The President of the Taza Regional Council is being prosecuted alongside ten other accused individuals, including his brothers, on suspicion of forming a network specialized in issuing fake invoices and establishing shell companies. This investigation was initiated based on findings from the regional judicial police in Fes.

The public prosecutor at the Fes court had ordered all suspects to be held in custody, resulting in their detention at the local prison in Bourkaiz prior to being brought before the criminal court to commence their trial.

The accused face serious charges, including fraud, forgery of public and commercial documents, issuance and use of certificates containing false information, participation in tax fraud through the issuance of fake invoices, as well as involvement in forgery and the use of forged documents, each according to the specific actions attributed to them.
