Lawyer from Rabat Files Complaint Against Anti-Normalization Activists Following Flag Burning

Controversy Erupts Over Complaints Against Activists

Faisal Oumarzouq, a controversial lawyer based in Rabat, has recently filed a complaint with the public prosecutor against several prominent figures associated with the anti-normalization movement in Morocco. This legal action comes in response to an incident that occurred during a pro-Palestinian demonstration on April 19, where an Israeli flag was set ablaze on Mohammed V Avenue in Rabat. Oumarzouq claims that these activists are inciting hatred and fostering connections with foreign entities, representing what he describes as the 'silent majority' supportive of Morocco's relations with Israel. The individuals named in the complaint include notable activists such as Aziz Ghali, former president of the Moroccan Association for Human Rights, Ahmed Ouahman, president of the Moroccan Observatory Against Normalization, and Aziz Hanaoui, Secretary General of the National Working Group for Palestine, among others.

In his complaint, Oumarzouq accuses the activists of utilizing digital means to incite crimes, promote hate speech, and engage in racial discrimination, thereby violating articles 221 and 431 of the penal code. He further emphasizes that their actions contravene constitutional principles that protect religious practices and maintain public order. Oumarzouq has urged the prosecutor's office to investigate potential links between the accused and foreign organizations, suggesting a broader agenda behind their activism.

Legal Action and Allegations of Extremism

In a statement to the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, Oumarzouq alleged that one of the accused had encouraged residents of Marrakech to 'kill the Jews', asserting that such inflammatory rhetoric warrants legal intervention to prevent possible crimes. He attempts to connect the defenders of the Palestinian cause in Morocco with various foreign agendas, alleging ties to entities like Algeria, Iran's regime under Khamenei, the Revolutionary Guards, Hezbollah, and the Muslim Brotherhood. These accusations are not new, as he had previously directed similar claims at members of Generation Z during protests in September 2025.

Oumarzouq expressed regret over Ghali's release by Israel after his arrest while participating in the Gaza Freedom Flotilla. He stated, 'In Morocco, we disavow him and condemn his actions. We have filed complaints against him.' He characterizes his complaint as a 'personal initiative from a citizen representing the vast majority of the populace', asserting that 'everyone supports Morocco-Israel relations, and we will defend our strategic ties. We will not allow these extremist organizations to exist. Extremists do not represent us, and we view Morocco and Israel as a singular entity.'

This is not the first time Oumarzouq has found himself at the center of controversy. Earlier in 2025, he called for the dissolution of the AMDH due to statements made by its then-president, Aziz Ghali, regarding the Western Sahara issue, where he mentioned the right to self-determination.
