Mali Withdraws Recognition of Sahrawi Republic, Supports Moroccan Autonomy Plan

Mali's Shift in Diplomatic Stance

On April 11, 2026, the government of Mali made a significant announcement regarding its diplomatic recognition of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic. After conducting a thorough review of the ongoing Sahara dispute and its implications for regional peace and security, Mali has decided to withdraw its recognition of the self-proclaimed republic. This decision was articulated by Mali's Foreign Minister, Abdoulaye Diop, following discussions with Nasser Bourita, the Moroccan Foreign Minister, who was in Bamako following directives from King Mohammed VI.

Support for Morocco's Autonomy Plan

In its official statement, Mali expressed strong support for Morocco's autonomy plan, deeming it the only viable and credible framework for resolving the longstanding territorial dispute. The Malian government emphasized that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is seen as the most pragmatic solution to achieve lasting peace in the region. Furthermore, Mali reaffirmed its backing for the efforts of the United Nations and its Secretary-General's personal envoy, along with the Security Council resolutions relevant to this issue, particularly Resolution 2797, which was adopted on October 31, 2025. Minister Diop indicated that Mali intends to relay its updated position to various regional and international organizations of which it is a member, as well as to the diplomatic community in Bamako.
