Minister of Foreign Affairs Reaffirms Sahrawi Commitment to Self-Determination at NUSW Congress

Strengthening the Sahrawi Cause

On April 22, 2026, in Smara Wilaya, Mr. Mohamed Yeslem Beissat, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Affairs, engaged with international women’s delegations attending the 10th Congress of the National Union of Sahrawi Women (NUSW). The meeting, which also featured the presence of NUSW’s Secretary-General, Ms. Shaba Seini, served as a platform to celebrate the congress’s achievements and discuss ongoing challenges faced by the Sahrawi people.

During his address, Minister Beissat extended heartfelt congratulations to the NUSW for the successful execution of their congress. He underscored the unique circumstances currently confronting the Sahrawi people, particularly the ongoing efforts by Moroccan authorities to undermine their inalienable right to self-determination. Beissat denounced these attempts, stating that they have consistently failed to diminish the resolve of the Sahrawi populace in their quest for freedom and independence.

Highlighting the significance of the Sahrawi state within the African continent, Minister Beissat pointed out its role as a founding member of the African Union. He reiterated the strong support the Sahrawi cause receives from allies and friends, as well as the legal recognition of this issue as one of decolonization, a stance endorsed by various United Nations and UN Security Council resolutions. This support is vital as it reinforces the legitimacy of the Sahrawi struggle and enhances their position in the ongoing discourse about their future.
