Mohamed Ouahbi Continues as Head Coach of Morocco Despite Criticism

Continuity in Moroccan Football Leadership

The Moroccan Football Federation has decided to maintain continuity in its coaching staff by retaining Mohamed Ouahbi as the national team head coach, despite facing criticism following the team’s exit from the World Cup quarterfinals. The announcement was made by federation official Abdessalam Belegchour via a statement on social media platform X, affirming the executive committee's confidence in Ouahbi's capabilities. Morocco's national team was eliminated from the tournament after a 0-2 defeat against France, which prompted a wave of critical feedback regarding the coaching decisions made during the competition.

Belegchour emphasized that the committee had reiterated its trust in Ouahbi, allowing him to continue his duties for the foreseeable future. The 49-year-old coach took over the reins from Walid Regragui in March. Prior to this, he had achieved significant success with the U20 team, leading them to a World Cup title. During the recent tournament held across the USA, Canada, and Mexico, Ouahbi guided the "Atlas Lions" to a commendable second place in their group behind Brazil, while securing victories in knockout rounds against the Netherlands and Canada. Notably, Morocco made history in 2022 as the first African nation to reach a World Cup semifinal.
