Search Efforts Intensify for Missing U.S. Military Personnel in Morocco
On May 7, 2023, reports emerged from Madrid that Moroccan authorities have mobilized significant terrestrial, aerial, and maritime resources to search for two missing U.S. soldiers. These servicemen disappeared while participating in the joint military exercises known as 'African Lion'. According to sources within the Moroccan Armed Forces, various entities including the Royal Gendarmerie, the Royal Navy, the Atlas Hunters, and Military Engineering units have been actively involved in the search operations. The soldiers were last seen near a cliff in the Cap Draa training area, located in the Tan Tan region of Morocco.
Since May 2, specialized units dedicated to search and rescue have been working tirelessly around the clock to locate the missing military personnel. This effort has been confirmed by the Moroccan state news agency, MAP, which highlighted the commitment of these teams in their quest to find the two U.S. soldiers. The disappearance of the soldiers was officially acknowledged on May 3 by U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), which promptly launched a coordinated rescue operation involving Moroccan forces and other nations participating in the military drills, which include over 5,600 troops from more than 40 countries.
