Ahmed Wehiman, the president of the Observatory, cautioned that interpreting this Marrakech event through the lens of religious freedom or tourism tolerance, as some media outlets linked to normalization agendas suggest, is misleading and lacks a strategic understanding. He asserts that this situation reflects an urgent effort by the occupying entity to transition from symbolic presence to an attempt to reconfigure geography within the Moroccan national domain.
Targeting Islamic Beliefs and National Symbols
Wehiman further elaborated that there is a systematic targeting of Islamic beliefs and national symbols, evidenced by the promotion of narratives that challenge the sanctity of prophethood, the desecration of the national anthem by merging it with the anthem of the occupying army, and media calls declaring Morocco as a Jewish land. He revealed that these practices are being gradually introduced as advertisements to gauge official and public reactions.
The Observatory president draws parallels between the current situation in Morocco and the early stages of the occupation of Palestine during the British mandate, recalling how the appropriation of the Al-Buraq Wall and the demolition of the Moroccan neighborhood began with merely limited prayers over a small area. He highlights that these movements coincided with statements from Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, who hints at the "right of Zionists to Moroccan soil, particularly Marrakech, as an alternative option in the event of an existential defeat of the entity."
