Strengthening Defense Cooperation Between Morocco and the U.S.
During a significant high-level meeting at the Pentagon, Morocco and the United States signed a military cooperation agreement that outlines a new roadmap for the years 2026 to 2036. This agreement is designed to bolster the bilateral defense alliance between the two nations. According to a statement released by the Royal Moroccan Army (FAR) on April 16, 2026, the signing occurred during the 14th session of the Moroccan-American Defense Council, held this week in Washington, D.C.
The Moroccan delegation, led by Defense Minister Abdellatif Loudiyi, was received by U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. The discussions during the meeting focused on enhancing bilateral relations, particularly in the fields of defense, cybersecurity, and technological innovation. This agreement represents a significant advancement in the strategic partnership between Morocco and the United States, coinciding with the upcoming edition of “African Lion,” the largest military exercise on the African continent, scheduled to take place from April 20 to May 8 in various Moroccan cities.
In addition, the FAR tested the tactical communication system Link-16 last February, a system previously reserved for NATO members that allows real-time data sharing among land, air, and naval forces. Politically, the FAR's statement further acknowledged Morocco's appreciation for U.S. support regarding Rabat's proposal for Western Sahara, emphasizing Morocco's commitment to regional stability and international security.
