Morocco Enhances Military Capabilities with New Apache Helicopters

Morocco's Strategic Acquisition of Apache Helicopters

Morocco has recently bolstered its military aviation capabilities with the acquisition of Boeing AH-64 Apache helicopters as part of a significant $1.5 billion agreement with the United States. This delivery is particularly notable as the advanced helicopters have recently been employed by U.S. forces to secure critical maritime routes in the Strait of Hormuz, underscoring their operational importance. The Royal Moroccan Air Force has confirmed the arrival of these aircraft, which are part of a phased procurement program initiated through a bilateral agreement signed with Washington in 2020. This agreement encompasses a total of 24 helicopters, with an option to procure an additional 12 units. The latest shipment follows the delivery of the first six helicopters to the 7th Air Base in Khouribga back in March 2025.

This procurement emphasizes Morocco's status as a key strategic ally of the United States in Africa. The kingdom regularly hosts joint military exercises and collaborates closely with the U.S. Africa Command, reflecting a deepening defense partnership. Washington has consistently strengthened its defense ties with Morocco, which stands as one of the largest recipients of American security assistance on the continent.

Increasing Regional Tensions and Military Preparedness

The acquisition of these advanced helicopters occurs against the backdrop of rising regional tensions in North Africa. The ongoing discord between Algeria and Morocco, primarily due to the Western Sahara conflict, continues to strain relations, while diplomatic friction with Egypt and shifting security alliances in the Mediterranean region pose additional challenges to military stability. Analysts suggest that Morocco's recent procurement reflects a concerted effort to secure deterrence and operational superiority in an increasingly complex regional landscape.

The AH-64E Apache Guardian stands out as one of the most advanced attack helicopters globally, featuring a 30mm M230 chain gun, AGM-114 Hellfire missiles with a range of approximately eight kilometers, and Hydra-70 rocket systems, making it highly versatile against armored and ground targets. The helicopter is equipped with the AN/APG-78 Longbow radar system, enabling it to track multiple targets even in adverse weather conditions, guide missiles in real time, and coordinate effectively with ground troops. The Apache has seen extensive use by U.S. forces, from Operation Desert Storm in Iraq to more recent operations in the context of Iran, including missions over the Strait of Hormuz and strikes against Iranian-backed militias in Iraq.

Washington has deployed these advanced helicopters to secure maritime routes, particularly before a two-week ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran temporarily reopened this strategically vital waterway. With this second delivery, Morocco is moving closer to establishing one of the most formidable fleets of attack helicopters in North Africa, further solidifying its strategic partnership with Washington and indicating a significant shift in the defense landscape across Africa as nations increasingly invest in modern air forces to address new regional security challenges.
