Morocco's Firm Stance Against Iranian Aggression
On Wednesday, during the 61st session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Morocco reiterated its strong condemnation of the heinous attacks launched by Iran against several Arab nations, including Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan. The Moroccan permanent representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Omar Zniber, articulated these sentiments during an urgent discussion dedicated to this pressing issue. He emphasized that such blatant aggression constitutes a flagrant violation of the sovereignty of these brotherly Arab nations and represents an unacceptable threat to regional security and stability.
In his address, Zniber recalled that King Mohammed VI had previously expressed Morocco's full solidarity with all affected nations, highlighting that these actions undermine the sincere efforts being made by Gulf countries to collaborate with Iran in fostering regional stability. Zniber pointed out that this aggression is part of an ongoing scheme of hostile activities aimed at destabilizing the region, which includes direct support provided by Iran to extremist and separatist groups across the area, as well as direct threats to the territorial integrity of Arab states.
Support for International Maritime Security
Furthermore, he condemned the targeting of civilian areas and infrastructure through Iranian missile attacks and drones. Morocco also strongly denounces Iran's assaults on commercial maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and actively supports the measures adopted by the International Maritime Organization to restore freedom of navigation in the area.
In conclusion, the ambassador praised the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2817, expressing Morocco's unwavering support for the draft resolution presented to the Human Rights Council regarding this matter. This resolution, which Morocco co-sponsored, vehemently condemns Iran's "unjustified" attacks against several Gulf countries and Jordan. It also expresses deep concern over strikes targeting civilians and vital infrastructure such as energy, transportation, water, and food, illuminating the severe implications these actions have on human rights, particularly for vulnerable groups.
Moreover, the draft resolution underscores the regional and international repercussions of military escalation, especially the disruptions affecting maritime trade in the Strait of Hormuz, which impact supply chains, food security, and living conditions globally. It reaffirms support for the sovereignty of targeted nations and recognizes their right to legitimate self-defense while condemning any violations of freedom of navigation and energy infrastructure.
