Morocco Eyes Direct Flights to India to Boost Tourism

Morocco's Aspirations for Direct Flights to India

Morocco is actively considering the introduction of direct flight routes to India as part of its broader strategy to enhance its tourism sector. However, officials have noted that the current number of travelers does not yet meet the necessary threshold to make this initiative commercially viable. According to Jamal Kilito, the country manager of the Moroccan National Tourism Office, there were approximately 54,000 Indian visitors to Morocco in 2025, with expectations for that figure to rise to 70,000 by 2026. Industry experts suggest that the introduction of direct flights would only become feasible once the number of arrivals reaches 100,000. At present, travelers between Morocco and India must rely on connecting flights through West Asian or European hubs, which not only extends travel times but also increases costs significantly. For instance, return airfares from Indian cities like Chennai are currently averaging around ₹80,000, which is comparable to those for European destinations. The establishment of direct routes could substantially lower these costs, thereby stimulating demand.

Morocco is already becoming a popular destination for Indian travelers, hosting at least ten Indian destination weddings annually, alongside 15 MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) groups. Additionally, it has been a favored filming location for several Bollywood productions, with the Moroccan government providing subsidies to promote such activities. This burgeoning interest in Morocco as a travel destination underscores the potential benefits of direct connectivity for both the tourism sectors of India and Morocco.

Upcoming Cultural Initiatives and Aviation Developments

In an exciting development for cultural tourism, the city of Fez in Morocco is set to launch a weekly cultural and entertainment program at Bab Boujloud Square starting from March 26, 2026. This initiative will feature performances every Friday through Sunday, beginning at 5 p.m., further enhancing the city’s appeal as a tourist destination.

Meanwhile, the aviation sector in Africa is witnessing significant developments. Tanzania's Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) anticipates generating over 10 billion Tanzanian shillings annually from international student enrollments at its new Civil Aviation Training Centre (CATC), which is expected to be completed by July 2028. Additionally, Ethiopian Airlines plans to resume its direct service between Addis Ababa Bole International Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on May 21, 2026, after a temporary suspension since February 2026. In Nigeria, the Civil Aviation Authority has issued an Air Operator Certificate to Binani Air Global Services, allowing the carrier to begin scheduled flight operations within one of Africa's largest aviation markets.
