Morocco Faces Major Setback Ahead of 2026 World Cup

As the 2026 World Cup approaches, Morocco, one of the African nations participating in the tournament, has encountered a significant setback with the loss of two key players. The Atlas Lions, as the Moroccan national team is known, are set to face a daunting challenge in their opening match against one of the tournament favorites, Brazil.

Morocco will have to navigate the World Cup without the services of Nayef Aguerd and Abde Ezzalzouli, both of whom have been ruled out due to injuries. Aguerd, a central defender for Olympique Marseille and a crucial figure in Morocco's defensive lineup, has not sufficiently recovered from a groin injury he sustained in early March. The 30-year-old opted for surgery to address the injury with hopes of regaining fitness in time for the World Cup; however, those plans have ultimately fallen through.

On the other hand, Ezzalzouli suffered a knee injury during the final warm-up match against Norway, which will also sideline him for the tournament. The winger was considered a vital part of Morocco's attacking strategy. In light of these injuries, Morocco has called up Marwane Saadane from Al Fateh and Amine Sbai from Angers as replacements for the two absentees.

The opening match presents an enormous challenge for the 2022 World Cup semi-finalists as they prepare to take on Brazil. Additionally, Morocco will face matches against Haiti and Scotland in Group C, further intensifying their journey in the tournament.
