Morocco Prepares for Severe Weather: Thunderstorms, Hail, and High Winds Expected This Week

Severe Weather Conditions Ahead for Morocco

Morocco is bracing for a tumultuous week ahead as the Directorate General of Meteorology (DGSM) warns of unstable weather patterns characterized by thunderstorms, possible hail, and strong winds across numerous regions of the country. An orange-level weather alert has been issued for Tuesday, which signifies the potential for significant weather disturbances. The forecast predicts that local thunderstorms could deliver between 25 and 35 mm of rainfall, particularly affecting provinces including Figuig, Boulemane, Settat, Marrakech, Kelaat Sraghna, Rehamna, and Al Haouz, between the hours of 2 p.m. and 11 p.m.

In addition to the heavy rainfall, meteorologists anticipate strong winds reaching speeds of 75 to 80 km/h in northern areas such as Tetouan, Tangier-Asilah, and Fahs-Anjra, particularly from midday until 6 p.m. These adverse conditions are typical for the spring season, which is often marked by rapid and intense weather fluctuations. The current instability has been attributed to an Atlantic low-pressure system situated near the Moroccan coast, which is funneling cold air into the upper atmosphere. This cold air is colliding with warm, moist air from the south, resulting in considerable atmospheric instability and the subsequent formation of active storm clouds capable of generating heavy rainfall, hail, and strong local winds.

Ongoing Weather Volatility Expected

As Tuesday progresses, temperatures are forecasted to be relatively cool, especially in the Atlas Mountains, where thunderstorms are expected to affect the High and Middle Atlas regions, Rehamna, the phosphate plateaus, Oulmes, and the eastern areas. Light rain may also fall in the southeast, the Rif, and northern parts of the southern provinces, with snowfall anticipated at higher elevations. The volatile weather will persist into Wednesday, with further thunderstorms predicted across the High and Anti-Atlas, Souss, the southeast, and Abda regions. Snowfall is likely to continue at elevated areas, accompanied by a significant drop in temperatures, particularly in the southeast.

Looking ahead to Thursday, the unsettled weather is set to continue, with thunderstorms anticipated in the southeast, eastern regions, and areas of the Atlas. While rainfall may ease in other regions, snow and strong winds are expected to persist in certain locations. From Friday onward, Morocco can expect the continuation of unstable weather patterns, especially in the northern parts of the country, alongside slightly cooler daytime temperatures and ongoing strong winds in various regions.
