Morocco Successfully Recovers Rare Fossils from France
In a remarkable achievement, Morocco has successfully reclaimed a collection of rare geological fossils, which include teeth from dinosaurs and extinct marine reptiles. This recovery follows the successful intervention by French customs authorities, who thwarted an illegal smuggling attempt of these invaluable artifacts earlier this year. The recovered shipment consists of nine unique fossils, dating back to the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 66 to 72 million years ago. Among these significant finds are the remains of ancient marine reptiles, as well as fossils closely related to ancient crocodiles, all of which were clandestinely extracted from Morocco's geological basin.
Cooperation in Protecting Cultural Heritage
The illegal transportation of these fossils was intercepted in February of the previous year when customs officials in Menton, France, seized a shipment truck that was making its way between Spain and Italy. Upon inspection, it was discovered that the truck carried this historical treasure from Morocco without the necessary legal permits. The repatriation of these fossils to Morocco marks the culmination of a close collaborative effort between Morocco's Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication and French authorities, aimed at enhancing cooperative frameworks for the protection of cultural heritage. This successful operation not only highlights Morocco's commitment to preserving its natural history but also underscores the importance of international cooperation in combating cultural heritage crimes.
