Morocco's Strategic Gas Pipeline Initiative
Morocco is actively pursuing funding amounting to $26 billion for a significant gas pipeline project that will stretch along the African coastline. This initiative aims to attract financial backing from major international institutions such as the Export-Import Bank of the United States and the World Bank, according to Morocco's chief diplomat in the United States, Ambassador Youssef Amrani. The project's strategic importance has been underscored by disruptions in energy flows from the Middle East, particularly due to the ongoing conflict in Iran, which has heightened the urgency to establish a reliable gas transport route from Africa to Europe.
Support from West African Leaders
On July 19, leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), comprising twelve nations, signed an international governmental agreement that formally supports the proposed pipeline project. The pipeline is expected to extend approximately 6,800 kilometers (nearly 4,230 miles) and will connect natural gas reserves from countries including Nigeria, Senegal, and Mauritania, eventually linking to the existing gas pipeline between Morocco and Europe, which currently connects to Spain. Amrani described the pipeline as one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects under development in Africa today.
This initiative is part of a broader wave of major energy projects across the continent, which also includes the proposed Trans-Saharan gas pipeline in Algeria and a new oil refinery project in Kenya led by Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote, along with several multi-billion dollar gas projects in Mozambique. Morocco's drive to implement this pipeline project, which has been under consideration for nearly a decade, is particularly timely as Europe seeks to diversify its gas supplies amid rising tensions and escalating prices influenced by geopolitical factors. The anticipated construction of the pipeline is set to commence in 2028, with initial gas deliveries expected by 2031, contingent upon securing the necessary financial commitments.
