Morocco Sets Ambitious Goal to Attract 2.3 Million Business Tourists by 2030

Strategic Growth in Business Tourism

Morocco has set an ambitious target of welcoming 2.3 million business tourists by the year 2030, as emphasized by Tourism Minister Fatim-Zahra Ammor during her recent address to the House of Councillors. This initiative is a crucial part of Morocco's strategy to enhance its stature as a premier destination for meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions, collectively known as the MICE sector. Ammor highlighted that business tourism not only plays a vital role in promoting tourist attractions but also generates substantial economic benefits and mitigates the seasonality associated with traditional tourism by drawing visitors year-round.

In recent years, Morocco's business tourism segment has witnessed remarkable growth, attracting significant investments across various cities. Currently, the country boasts a national capacity of 135,000 seats designated for conferences, exhibitions, and corporate events. In a bid to expand this capacity further, the Minister announced plans for a new congress palace in Agadir, which will accommodate 5,000 attendees and is slated to open by the end of 2026. Additionally, the construction of a state-of-the-art congress center in Marrakech is underway, with a staggering capacity of 20,000 seats. This project aims to solidify Marrakech's position in the global business tourism landscape, aspiring to rank among the top ten global destinations for conferences and corporate gatherings.

Investment and Infrastructure Development

Meanwhile, in Casablanca, proposals are being evaluated for a future congress center, aligning with the goal of enhancing business tourism infrastructure by 2030. The discussions are currently focused on determining suitable locations and forming potential partnerships for this initiative. In a significant development, Ammor also announced an agreement to construct a new exhibition center in Rabat, which will necessitate an investment of MAD 700 million. This project will be a collaborative effort, jointly funded by the Ministry of Tourism and local authorities within the Rabat-Sale-Kénitra region.

Ammor acknowledged that large-scale projects dedicated to business tourism require considerable time for securing finances, completing investments, and executing construction activities. Nonetheless, she reiterated the ministry’s commitment to fostering similar projects in regions with the necessary potential to thrive in this tourism sector. The advancement of business tourism is integral to Morocco's broader strategy to enhance its tourism offerings in anticipation of significant international events, including the upcoming 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Morocco will co-host alongside Spain and Portugal.

In recent years, Morocco has made substantial investments in its tourism infrastructure, encompassing airports, hotels, transport networks, and cultural attractions. The government is also pursuing ambitious plans to diversify its tourism offerings beyond conventional leisure travel by emphasizing business tourism, sports tourism, cultural tourism, and eco-tourism. With these strategic investments, Morocco aims to attract a growing number of international visitors, boost tourism revenues, create employment opportunities, and fortify its standing as one of Africa's leading tourism destinations.
