Morocco's Historic Participation in the Art History Festival
Morocco is set to take center stage as the honored guest at the 15th edition of the Art History Festival, scheduled to take place from June 5 to June 7, 2026, in Fontainebleau, France. This marks a significant milestone as it will be the first time an African country holds such a prominent position in this prestigious event, which is organized by the National Institute of Art History (INHA) and the Château de Fontainebleau, under the auspices of the French Ministry of Culture. Supported by the Council of the Moroccan Community Abroad (CCME), the Moroccan Embassy in France, and the Moroccan Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication, this edition aims to showcase the "richness and diversity of Moroccan cultural heritage," as stated in an official announcement.
The festival's program will highlight "exceptional archaeological heritage, centuries-old artistic traditions, and ever-evolving cultural expressions." The CCME elaborates that Morocco will be presented as a unique civilizational space, situated at the crossroads of Europe and Africa, the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. Attendees can look forward to over 300 cultural and scientific encounters that are open to everyone, emphasizing dialogue, reflection, and discovery through conferences, round tables, and various meetings.
Exploring Moroccan Artistic Heritage and Cinema
This year's programming will provide audiences with insights into the significant milestones of Moroccan artistic history, offering perspectives on "the legacies of the protectorate and the post-independence era, as well as Morocco's relationships with Europe and its role on the African continent." Additionally, the festival will shine a light on pivotal intellectual and artistic experiences from the post-independence period, particularly focusing on the magazine Anfas and the Casablanca School of Fine Arts, alongside exploring "the history of Moroccan craftsmanship" and "the influence of traditional knowledge on contemporary creation."
Cinema will also feature prominently in the festival, with contributions from renowned filmmakers such as Nabil Ayouch, Maryam Touzani, Simon Bitton, and Izza Genini. Moreover, the event will pay tribute to the works of the late Ahmed Bouanani. The program will include artistic and musical performances, as well as educational and creative workshops. In conjunction with the festival, several books will be presented at the book fair organized for this occasion.
