Morocco's Rising Popularity as a Tourist Destination
Morocco has emerged as the safest travel destination in Africa, according to the 2026 tourism safety index released by HelloSafe. With an impressive score of 73.25 out of 100, the nation ranks first in Africa and 42nd globally among approximately fifty evaluated destinations. This ranking underscores the country's political stability, the quality of its tourism infrastructure, and a generally welcoming environment for international visitors, enhancing Morocco's appeal as a safe and reliable destination both on the continent and worldwide.
According to the same 2026 HelloSafe index, Morocco's safety metrics, including public security, crime rates, political and social stability, health security, cybersecurity, and environmental risks, highlight its suitability for travelers. In 2025, Morocco welcomed 19.8 million tourists, marking a significant 14% increase from 17.4 million in 2024, which further affirms its attractiveness as a premier destination in Africa.
Tourism expert Said Tahiri remarked on the positive feedback received from major hospitality providers in key tourist destinations such as Marrakech, Agadir, and Fès, as well as across the country. He emphasized that these encouraging trends are not coincidental but rather the result of sustained efforts and groundwork laid by the Moroccan tourism sector. However, he also noted the need for continued improvements in hotel occupancy rates, which currently range between 52% and 55%, varying by city and establishment category.
The significance of this ranking lies in its potential to bolster Morocco's tourism attractiveness, instill confidence among international travelers, and enhance investments in infrastructure and security. These efforts collectively work to solidify Morocco's image as a safe and stable tourist destination on a global scale.
