Embracing Innovation in Morocco's Trade Sector
In Marrakech, the Minister of Industry and Trade, Ryad Mezzour, urged Moroccan traders to embrace innovation to keep pace with the profound transformations currently affecting the trade sector. This call to action was made during the opening of the National Trade Forum, an event designed to address the evolving landscape of commerce in the country.
With the rapid acceleration of digitization and the evolution of distribution networks, the minister emphasized the crucial role of local trade, highlighting that small traders serve as a fundamental pillar within the social and economic fabric of Morocco. They provide essential services and maintain close proximity to consumers, which is vital for the community's well-being.
Despite the availability of suitable digital solutions, the adoption of electronic payment methods remains below the desired level. This issue stems primarily from the low profit margins experienced by small traders on essential goods, which typically range from 4% to 6%. In contrast, electronic payment processing fees can consume up to 75% of these modest profits, creating a challenging environment for merchants.
To address this situation, collaborative efforts are underway with various partners, including Poste Bank, to reduce electronic payment costs. This initiative targets commonly used services, such as mobile phone top-ups, with the goal of making these payment methods more appealing to traders.
Additionally, the minister highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance commercial infrastructure across the nation. Morocco is home to approximately 1,200 markets, with 289 markets—primarily in rural areas—currently undergoing a modernization program as a first step before broader implementation nationwide.
In a related development, Mohamed Amin Soussi, Director of Skills Development and Digital Transformation at the General Directorate of Local Communities (DGCT) under the Ministry of Interior, underscored the importance of organizing and structuring economic activities in line with national strategic directions. He announced the preparation of a reference guide for unregulated activities aimed at simplifying procedures and standardizing operational conditions.
This guide will provide a clear classification of activities based on their legal status, whether it be a simple declaration, a declaration with specifications, or prior authorization, thereby enhancing transparency for professionals and local authorities alike.
The forum, organized under the esteemed patronage of King Mohammed VI, is part of a national initiative to modernize the sector. Held under the theme 'Moroccan Trade 2030', the event aims to bolster the role of trade in regional development and ensure inclusive and sustainable growth.
