Morocco's Significant Growth in Renewable Energy Capacity
In an impressive stride towards sustainability, Morocco has successfully added 192 megawatts (MW) of solar and wind energy capacity in 2025, elevating its total renewable energy capacity to an impressive 4,851 MW. This marks an increase from 4,659 MW in the previous year, as reported by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). The latest figures highlight Morocco’s commitment to enhancing its renewable energy infrastructure, positioning the nation as the second-largest renewable energy market in North Africa based on data from IRENA's Renewable Capacity Statistics 2026 report.
The substantial growth in renewable energy generation during the year can be attributed exclusively to the development of solar and wind projects. Notably, installed solar capacity surged to 1,086 MW, primarily driven by advancements in solar photovoltaic technology, which saw an impressive increase of 135 MW, bringing its total to 546 MW. Meanwhile, the capacity from concentrated solar power remained steady at 540 MW, indicating a stabilization in that sector.
Moreover, onshore wind capacity also experienced a significant boost, increasing by 57 MW to reach a total of 2,452 MW by the end of 2025. This growth underscores Morocco's strategic focus on harnessing both solar and wind resources to meet its renewable energy goals. In contrast, the hydropower sector remained unchanged with a capacity of 1,306 MW, and bioenergy also maintained its status at 7 MW. Notably, Morocco continues to lead North Africa with its pumped hydro storage capacity of 814 MW, which has remained consistent since 2024, demonstrating the country's unique position in energy storage technology.
The increase in renewable energy capacity has significantly impacted the overall energy landscape in Morocco, with the share of renewables in the total installed power capacity rising to 39.6 percent in 2025, up from 38.7 percent in 2024. This achievement not only highlights Morocco's commitment to sustainable energy practices but also sets a benchmark for other nations in the region striving for cleaner energy solutions.
