The players allege that a total of $1,220 was stolen from their rooms while they were preparing for their matches. Among the affected players is Esther Okoronkwo, who has publicly revealed that she lost a staggering $700. The captain of the team, Rasheedat Ajibade, reported a loss of $200, while defenders Osinachi Ohale and Halimatu Ayinde each claimed $100 had gone missing. Another player, Joy Omewa, reported a theft of $120. The cumulative loss of these amounts totals $1,220, prompting questions about the hotel's security protocols.
This alarming situation came to light through social media, specifically a series of posts made by Esther Okoronkwo on Snapchat, where she expressed her frustration with the hotel's staff, claiming that housekeeping entered their rooms in their absence to steal money. Okoronkwo also criticized the uncooperative nature of the hotel staff when she sought answers regarding the incident.
Initially, neither the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) nor the hotel management issued any official statements regarding the theft. However, it has recently been confirmed by a communications officer associated with the Nigerian team that the incident has been reported to the relevant authorities for investigation. As of now, it remains unclear whether a formal complaint has been filed with Moroccan authorities, and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has yet to comment on the matter.
This incident comes just days before Nigeria's opening match against Malawi, set to take place on July 28 at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat. The Super Falcons, who are the reigning champions and hold the record for the most titles in the tournament's history with ten victories, are determined to secure their eleventh title despite this distressing setback off the field.
