Preventive Mobilization Against Venomous Creatures in Morocco
The Marrakech-Safi region in Morocco has alarmingly recorded the highest number of fatalities related to venomous encounters. According to the Moroccan Anti-Poison and Pharmacovigilance Center (CAPM), the kingdom reported a staggering 20,583 cases of scorpion stings and 405 snake bites in 2025, leading to numerous deaths. This initiative aligns with a national campaign spearheaded by the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, which began in the province of Kelâat-Sraghna during the National Anti-Poison Prevention Week. The association emphasizes that effective prevention against the risks associated with scorpion stings and snake bites involves a series of collaborative efforts from citizens, municipalities, and health professionals. A critical aspect of this initiative includes educating communities about the various types of venomous creatures, their levels of danger, and the locations where they tend to thrive. The summer season, exacerbated by heatwaves, humidity, stagnant water, and the accumulation of waste, creates an ideal environment for these creatures to proliferate. Poor hygiene and lack of maintenance in living areas further facilitate the spread of not only venomous creatures but also other pests like cockroaches, flies, and mosquitoes, posing a significant challenge to public health and quality of life.
