Rabat Honors First 'Museum of Morocco' Labels to Cultural Institutions

Celebrating Cultural Excellence in Moroccan Museums

On March 11, 2026, a significant ceremony took place at the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rabat, marking a historic moment in the Moroccan cultural landscape as five esteemed museums were awarded the inaugural 'Museum of Morocco' labels. This prestigious certification, granted by the National Museum Foundation (FNM), recognizes institutions that adhere to high standards in collection preservation, management, and promotion. The honored recipients include the Nejjarine Museum of Wood Arts and Crafts in Fez, the Bank Al-Maghrib Museum in Rabat and Marrakech, the Al Maaden Contemporary African Art Museum (MACAAL), the Yves Saint Laurent Museum, and the Pierre Bergé Museum of Berber Arts.

This certification is valid for four years, with the possibility of renewal, and serves to underline the commitment of these institutions to international museum standards. During the event, Mehdi Qotbi, president of the FNM, emphasized that this initiative not only enhances the visibility of Moroccan heritage but also aligns with the Royal Vision aimed at transforming museums into centers of excellence that convey meaning, beauty, and the transmission of cultural heritage.

Advancing Moroccan Heritage through Museum Standards

Abdellatif Jouahri, Governor of Bank Al-Maghrib, highlighted the museum's long-standing dedication to making Moroccan numismatic and artistic heritage accessible to all. He expressed pride in the museum’s efforts to collaborate with various partners nationally and internationally to preserve and promote Moroccan heritage. Saida Lamrani, president of the Mohammed Karim Lamrani Foundation representing the Nejjarine Museum, echoed this sentiment, noting that the distinction reflects the foundation's commitment to restoring the Nejjarine district, a true representation of Morocco's diverse culture.

Othman Lazraq, director of the Alliances Foundation, representing MACAAL, expressed his pride in this recognition, which coincides with the museum's ten-year anniversary and its significant role in the artistic community. Madison Cox, president of the Jardin Majorelle Foundation, representing the Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé Museums, conveyed his honor in being among the first institutions to receive this label, which he believes will inspire other museums to contribute to the cultural prominence of Morocco. In a world where Morocco is increasingly asserting itself on the international stage through its rich heritage, the 'Museum of Morocco' label emerges as a vital tool for enhancing this momentum and showcasing the excellence of the country's cultural institutions.
