Rabat's Cultural Landscape Enriched by International Art Exhibition
On March 25, 2026, the National Museum of Photography in Rabat commenced a remarkable collective exhibition featuring works from eleven talented photographers, six of whom are Moroccan. This artistic showcase is part of the Southern Contemporary Art Biennale, known as BIENALSUR. The exhibition, inaugurated by Mehdi Qotbi, the president of the National Foundation of Museums, emphasizes the theme "Let's Play - Re-enchanting the World," and will run for a duration of six months, offering visitors a profound exploration of contemporary art.
The participating photographers include Amine Oulmakki, Abdelhamid Belahmid, Mouna Karimi, Laila Hida, Seif Kousmate, and Deborah Benzaquen from Morocco, alongside international artists like Marcelino Melo from Brazil, Aimée Zito Lema from the Netherlands/Argentina, Jordi Colomer from Spain, Gabriela Bettini from Spain/Argentina, and Marcos López from Argentina. This diverse group brings together a rich tapestry of perspectives, each artist interpreting the theme in their unique way.
Art as a Reflection of Human Experience
The exhibition is described as a "choral exhibition" by the National Museum of Photography, showcasing how each artist approaches the challenge of perceiving and reinventing the world around them. The artists collectively harness the power of imagination, the strength of dreams, and the playful aspects of creativity to question the human condition. In remarks to the press, Mehdi Qotbi highlighted the significant role of BIENALSUR in fostering artistic expression, noting that art is currently flourishing in Morocco. He expressed the ambition of the event to provide a fresh perspective on reality, inviting audiences to rediscover the plurality of meanings, the richness of sensations, and the vastness of possibilities.
Artist Mouna Karimi contributed her insights during the exhibition, referencing a piece that features the face of a Berber woman wrapped in artisanal fabric. She articulated her view that this work serves as an alternative perspective that shines a light on art often overlooked. The National Museum of Photography, under the curation of Soufiane Er-Rahoui, aims to continue this dialogue through such exhibitions, which not only showcase art but also spark meaningful conversations about culture and identity.
BIENALSUR, which originated in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 2015, is a global art initiative that is distinguished by its decentralized format and simultaneous exhibitions across numerous cities worldwide. This biennale aspires to create a mapping of contemporary art that rivals traditional models centered in Europe or North America, positioning itself as a transnational platform for artistic dialogue.
