Rabat Transformed: The Magic of the JIDAR Street Art Festival

Rabat Becomes a Canvas for Street Art Enthusiasts

In Morocco, artists from diverse backgrounds have magnificently turned the buildings of Rabat into enormous canvases during the 11th edition of the JIDAR Rabat Street Art Festival. This event has showcased a rich tapestry of creativity, featuring works by various international artists, including Ecuadorian artist Oscar Medina. His contributions highlight an array of themes, from a giant bird holding the sun and moon to mysterious portraits and vibrant scenes depicting the African bush, along with iconic representations of life in Morocco.

Oscar Medina, known as Azpeger, shared insights into his creative process, stating, "My working method involves consistently creating sketches that I draw almost daily, which I then use to make small collages. When I learned I would be coming to Morocco, I created a collage based on sketches I had previously made. The overarching theme is to speak about travel, nature, and the elements that shape us all as human beings." His artistic vision reflects a deep connection to the environment and the experiences that mold individual identities.

The Impact of Community and Cultural Dialogue

Another highlight of the festival is the stunning mural by South African artist Keya Tama, who chose to paint a majestic lion at the heart of a building, surrounded by lush greenery. Keya Tama expressed optimism about the budding street art scene in Africa, noting, "In Africa in general, this is just the beginning, and there is a positive aspect to that: everyone who has ventured into mural painting and found success has done so out of love for this art form. I believe that the level of community, sincerity, and communication reflected in their art plays a significantly important role in the global dialogue on art."

According to Salaheddine Malouli, the artistic director of the JIDAR Rabat Street Art Festival, the organization of such festivals has been instrumental in enhancing the visibility of Rabat. He explained, "We are working on large-scale murals, which has paved the way for Moroccan street artists. Initially, there wasn't really a street art community in Morocco, but over the years, thanks to dedicated festivals, a substantial community of Moroccan artists has emerged. This has also profoundly impacted how society perceives street art in Morocco." With a total of 15 murals displayed across various locations in the city, Rabat is transformed into an open-air gallery where all artistic styles are accessible to everyone.
