Government Plans to Revitalize Rabat’s Historic Notabile Station
The Maltese government is embarking on an ambitious project to breathe new life into the Notabile Station in Rabat, a once-thriving part of the historic Malta Railway network. This initiative, led by the Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries, and Animal Rights, aims to transform the currently disused and neglected structure into a modern veterinary clinic. The plans, outlined in the planning application PA/3118/26, emphasize the concept of 'adaptive reuse,' which seeks to preserve the historical integrity of the site while repurposing it for contemporary needs.
The application, which is currently undergoing the final stages of screening and will soon be published in the Government Gazette, includes provisions for the careful restoration of the station. Among the proposed enhancements is the removal of later additions that have compromised its original design, the replacement of unsafe ceilings, and the reopening of the station's original arcades, which have been infilled for decades. These changes are expected to significantly improve the station's aesthetic, restoring its historical charm and making it more accessible to the public.
A Glimpse into the History of Notabile Station
Established in 1883, Notabile Station served as the original terminus of the Malta Railway, which was designed to connect Valletta with Mdina. The station was meant to cater to travelers heading to Mdina, which was then referred to as Città Notabile. However, the geographic challenges of the plateau on which Mdina and Rabat sit posed significant hurdles for railway construction. The station was built below Saqqajja Hill, requiring passengers to ascend the hill to reach their destination. Over the years, the Notabile Station underwent several transformations, including its reconstruction in the early 20th century and its conversion into a residential building following the closure of the railway in 1931.
Despite its rich history, the Notabile Station has seen better days, with significant damage occurring during various development attempts, particularly in the late 1960s when plans for an agricultural market were halted. As a result, much of the station's original structure has been lost, and it ceased to function as a residence some time ago. The infilling of the arcades, a modification that took place by 1967, detracted from the station's historical façade, a change that the current revitalization project aims to reverse.
