Royal Air Maroc Halts Flights to Europe and Africa Amid Rising Fuel Costs

Royal Air Maroc Suspends Key Routes Due to Fuel Price Surge

In a significant move impacting travelers between Europe and Africa, Royal Air Maroc has announced the temporary suspension of several flight routes, including the vital Brussels–Marrakech service. This decision comes in response to the escalating prices of aviation fuel, which have surged due to ongoing tensions in the Middle East and a subsequent dip in passenger demand for certain services. The Moroccan airline has cited these factors as the driving forces behind its necessity to recalibrate its international operations.

The airline has indicated that these route suspensions are not permanent; rather, they are a strategic response aimed at navigating the current economic landscape. Once conditions improve both operationally and economically, Royal Air Maroc intends to gradually reinstate its suspended services. Alongside the Brussels route, flights from Marrakech to Marseille, Lyon, and Bordeaux will also be temporarily halted, and routes from Tangier to Barcelona and Malaga are similarly affected. Additionally, several routes from Casablanca to key African cities such as Bangui, Brazzaville, Kinshasa, Douala, Yaoundé, and Libreville have been suspended, further illustrating the extensive impact of rising fuel costs on the airline's operations.

The skyrocketing fuel prices are largely attributed to conflicts in the Middle East, which have disrupted supply lines through the crucial Strait of Hormuz—an essential corridor for aviation fuel destined for European markets. This dramatic increase in costs has prompted numerous airlines, particularly low-cost carriers, to either cut back or completely cancel flights, highlighting the pervasive effects of the fuel crisis across the aviation industry.

Despite these challenges, Royal Air Maroc remains committed to a long-term growth strategy initiated in 2023, which aims to expand its fleet from approximately 50 aircraft to 200 by the year 2037. The airline is striving to ensure that it can adapt to current market conditions while maintaining its ambitious expansion goals.
