Ryanair Group Eyes Morocco for New Engine Maintenance Facilities

In a strategic move to enhance its operational capabilities, Ryanair Group is actively considering Morocco as a potential site for its upcoming engine maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facilities. During a recent interview in Vienna on April 21, Ryanair Group CEO Michael O’Leary revealed that the company is currently in negotiations with six potential locations for these critical MRO operations. The contenders include Spain, Italy, Poland, the Baltic states, Northern Ireland, and Morocco.

According to O’Leary, Morocco stands out as a viable option among the most likely locations for establishing two engine MRO sites, which are part of the airline's broader strategy to enhance its maintenance capabilities. He emphasized the urgency of the decision, stating that Ryanair plans to finalize the first location within the next few months, with a significant investment totaling $800 million earmarked for both sites.

In addition to evaluating potential MRO sites, Ryanair has recently entered into a memorandum of understanding with CFM International. This agreement outlines a multi-year, multi-billion-dollar partnership aimed at providing comprehensive engine services to support Ryanair's low-cost carrier (ULCC) engine MRO strategy. O’Leary highlighted the importance of this 15-year supply agreement, which is crucial for ensuring the airline's access to both engine overhauls and spare parts.

Morocco is not only being evaluated for its MRO capabilities but is also recognized as one of Ryanair Group’s fastest-growing markets. However, O’Leary noted that the airline's most rapidly expanding regions currently include Albania, where it has four based aircraft in Tirana, and Slovakia, with up to five based aircraft in Bratislava. This expansion is part of Ryanair's overall strategy to scale its operations and meet increasing passenger demand.

Operating a robust fleet of 647 Boeing 737-800s and 737-8-200s, Ryanair anticipates transporting an impressive total of 208 million passengers in fiscal 2026, a slight increase from the 207 million passengers recorded in the previous year. With ambitious plans and strategic partnerships in place, Ryanair Group is poised for continued growth in the competitive aviation landscape.
