Two U.S. Soldiers Reported Missing During Recreational Hike

In a concerning development, two U.S. service members have been reported missing after they went on a hike during the African Lion 2026 military exercises in southwestern Morocco. The soldiers were last seen near ocean cliffs close to the Cap Draa Training Area, located near the city of Tan Tan, on May 2. According to officials from the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), these service members were engaged in a recreational activity following the completion of their scheduled military exercises when they failed to return.

As the search for the missing soldiers commenced, AFRICOM confirmed that both U.S. Army personnel were not participating in any training at the time of their disappearance. The joint search efforts, which include collaboration between U.S. and Moroccan forces, were launched promptly after the soldiers were reported missing. Initial reports suggest that there is a possibility they may have fallen into the ocean, although this remains unconfirmed as the situation is still being assessed.

The African Lion exercise is noted as the largest U.S. joint military exercise in Africa, involving over 7,000 personnel from more than 30 nations. This year's exercise began in Tunisia in April and is set to conclude in early May, encompassing a range of military operations across multiple countries, including Morocco, Tunisia, Ghana, and Senegal. The focus of the ongoing search and rescue operation remains on ensuring the safety of the service members and providing support to their families during this difficult time.
