Major Drug Bust in Algeria
In a significant law enforcement operation conducted this week, Algerian authorities successfully dismantled two organized smuggling networks involved in the trafficking of narcotics in the western region of the country. This operation led to the seizure of over a quintal (100 kilograms) of processed cannabis resin originating from Morocco, as well as the arrest of four individuals connected to these criminal activities, according to a statement released on Thursday.
The first operation was carried out by the regional drug enforcement agency in Béchar, where officers intercepted a shipment of drugs estimated at 79.25 kilograms. This successful intervention resulted in the arrest of three members of the smuggling network and the recovery of a significant sum of 365 million Algerian dinars attributed to their illicit activities. Meanwhile, the second operation, executed by the mobile judicial police unit in the Sidi Bel-Abbès province, led to the discovery of an additional 57 kilograms of processed cannabis. This operation effectively disrupted the criminal activities of the organization and resulted in the detention of one of the network's operatives, along with the confiscation of a vehicle used in the transport of these drugs.
The suspects have been presented to the respective public prosecutors at the courts of Béchar and Sidi Bel-Abbès, where legal proceedings are expected to follow. The ongoing efforts by Algerian authorities to combat drug trafficking reflect the country's commitment to curbing the flow of illegal substances and dismantling organized crime networks linked to drug smuggling from neighboring countries.
