Spanish Authorities Seize Over 2.5 Tons of Cannabis in Major Drug Bust

Major Drug Trafficking Operation Disrupted in Spain

The Spanish security forces have successfully thwarted a significant international drug trafficking operation, resulting in the seizure of more than 2.5 tons of cannabis originating from Morocco, along with several firearms. This incident underscores the persistent activities of smuggling networks operating from Morocco, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in combating drug-related crimes.

This operation was carried out by the Customs Surveillance Service of the Spanish Tax Agency in coordination with the Spanish police and the Civil Guard. It followed intelligence investigations that revealed a criminal network's plan to unload a large shipment of drugs via the Guadiana River using high-speed boats specifically designed for smuggling. The drugs were intended for storage in a secret warehouse located in a remote area between the towns of San Silvestre de Guzmán and Villablanca in the Huelva province.

Details of the Operation and Arrests

According to a statement issued by the Customs Tax Agency, the network was utilizing an illicit dock, known to investigators as the “smugglers’ dock,” taking advantage of fishing boat activities to conceal their operations. However, the suspects managed to escape before law enforcement arrived, resulting in no arrests at this stage of the investigation.

Official data indicates that the investigation was initiated following the receipt of intelligence about an imminent smuggling operation. Authorities tracked a stolen vehicle in Alcalá de Guadaira, located in the Seville province, suspected of being used to transport large quantities of drugs. Surveillance led to the identification of the farm that was being used as a logistics center for storing the shipments.

After implementing ground surveillance in the area, investigators documented the transfer of numerous bundles of cannabis from a speedboat to the vehicle during the early hours of June 24. As the vehicle returned to the farm, security units intervened immediately after the activity ceased within the storage site.

The raid resulted in the seizure of three stolen vehicles, two rifles, three handguns, and 64 bundles of cannabis weighing approximately 2,560 kilograms. Two individuals who were present at the farm managed to flee, and efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend them.

This Spanish security intervention adds to a series of similar operations conducted by the state in recent months against networks smuggling cannabis from Morocco. There is a growing concern among observers that these networks are becoming more heavily armed and organized.

The repeated seizures of large quantities of Moroccan cannabis within Spain and other European countries have intensified criticisms aimed at the Moroccan regime, with media and human rights reports accusing it of failing to take effective measures to curb the sources of this trade.

Investigations are still ongoing under the supervision of Spanish judicial authorities, while the suspects face charges related to international drug trafficking, illegal possession of firearms, auto theft, and involvement in an organized criminal network.
