Political Outcry in Spain Against Moroccan Actions in Western Sahara
In a significant political development, several Spanish political parties have called for a complete severance of diplomatic relations with Morocco, citing the North African country's oppressive practices in Western Sahara. This demand comes in light of allegations regarding human rights violations perpetrated against the Sahrawi people. According to Izza Sira, a member of the Podemos Party, the ongoing Moroccan occupation of Western Sahara is characterized by severe repression and targeted attacks on Sahrawis, which she argues is indicative of a broader pattern of aggressive policies that go unchecked due to a prevailing culture of impunity surrounding these violations.
Sira has expressed deep concerns about the situation, labeling it "extremely serious" and asserting that the Moroccan dictatorship is effectively exterminating the Sahrawi population to maintain its occupation. She further accused Morocco of drawing inspiration from its ally, Israel, suggesting that the Moroccan government feels emboldened by the lack of accountability for its actions, similar to the perceived impunity enjoyed by Israeli forces in their own conflicts.
Additionally, Sira urged the Spanish government not only to condemn these actions but also to take immediate steps to cut ties with Morocco. She contended that remaining silent in the face of Moroccan abuses merely encourages the occupying authorities to continue their systematic violations against the Sahrawi people and their legitimate rights.
Echoing these sentiments, Enrique Santiago, a deputy from the Sumar coalition and spokesperson for the United Left party in the Spanish parliament, condemned the oppressive methods targeting Sahrawis, drawing parallels to the tactics employed by Israel against occupied populations. The calls for action reflect a growing awareness and support for the Sahrawi cause within Spain, as the Sumar party, part of the current governing coalition, stresses the need for Spain to acknowledge its historical responsibilities regarding the decolonization process in Western Sahara.
These developments highlight a rising chorus of criticism within Spanish political circles regarding Morocco's conduct in Western Sahara, alongside increasing calls for accountability and an end to the impunity surrounding the Moroccan occupation. The situation continues to garner attention as more voices join the call for justice for the Sahrawi people.
