Strengthening Agricultural Ties: Japanese Minister's Visit to Morocco

On June 20, the Office Chérifien des Phosphates (OCP) welcomed Japan's Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, Norikazu Suzuki, at its Jorf Lasfar site. This visit, accompanied by an official delegation, signifies the strong relationships that OCP has cultivated with its Japanese partners, highlighting Morocco's growing role in food security and sustainable agriculture.

The backdrop of this visit is a global landscape characterized by an increasing interest in the resilience of agricultural product supply chains and fertilizers. Many nations are keen on diversifying their partnerships to ensure a sustainable supply of essential nutrients for agricultural production. The relationship between OCP and its Japanese partners dates back to 1961. Over more than six decades, this collaboration has evolved from mutual interests and long-term cooperation into a strategic partnership that goes beyond mere trade exchanges to encompass food security, agricultural production development, innovation, and nutrient management.

OCP leverages its industrial and agricultural expertise to support Japan's aspirations in developing its agricultural sector and contributes to food security in Japan and the ASEAN region, which faces challenges related to population growth, climate change, and decreasing fertility of agricultural lands. This partnership aligns with OCP's transformation aimed at producing more sustainable solutions for plant nutrition. The group has launched a green investment program for the period from 2023 to 2027, with an investment of approximately $13 billion, aimed at increasing its production capacity, developing low-carbon footprint fertilizers, and enhancing reliance on renewable energies and unconventional water sources.

This program aims to boost plant nutrition solutions production to 20 million tons annually by 2027, alongside a pathway that aspires to achieve complete carbon neutrality by 2040. These initiatives are particularly significant for Asian partners, given the rising demand for more sustainable agricultural products that comply with new environmental standards.

Moreover, OCP is working on developing customized fertilization solutions that take into account the soil type, crops, and climatic conditions of each region, rather than relying on uniform models that may not meet the actual needs of plants. This approach is facilitated through soil analysis, scientific research, and the use of data and digital technologies, which enable improved yield, reduced waste, and the preservation of natural resources.

The "Mouhtar" initiative is a practical example of this approach, providing farmers with data-driven tools, customized fertilization solutions, and training and technical support programs. OCP also relies on a research and innovation ecosystem that includes the Mohamed VI Polytechnic University, which works on developing new solutions in precision agriculture, artificial intelligence, soil health, and adaptation to climate changes.

In this context, the Japanese minister's visit to Jorf Lasfar transcends ceremonial aspects, as it is part of a cooperation journey that brings together agricultural supply security, innovation, sustainability, and knowledge exchange, benefiting farmers and food systems in Japan and the ASEAN region. The visit reflects a shared ambition to promote more efficient and sustainable agriculture through responsible nutrient management, the development of solutions tailored to the specificities of soils and crops, and investment in scientific research and new technologies to tackle the food challenges of future generations.

The Office Chérifien des Phosphates looks forward to continuing and deepening this partnership, drawing on a legacy of cooperation that spans over six decades, and on a vision that positions Morocco as a reliable industrial and scientific platform to serve global food security and support farmers, communities, and agricultural systems in various regions.
