Strategic Meeting for the Argan Biosphere Reserve Network
On April 24, 2026, a significant consultative and training meeting took place in Taroudant, aimed at implementing the strategic plan for the period 2026-2030 for the Argan Biosphere Reserve Network. This event brought together representatives from various associations, cooperatives, and relevant sectors associated with the Argan Reserve as part of the AMUSSU project, which seeks to enhance the capacity of civil society in Morocco to promote good governance, environmental sustainability, and climate action. The project is under the auspices of the Strategic Support Program for Civil Society in Morocco (PASSC), funded by the European Union, and is overseen by a civil coalition that includes the Migration and Development Organization (M&D), the Association of Earth and Life Science Teachers (AESVT), and the Organization for the Cooperation and Development of Emerging Countries (COSP).
This meeting is part of the ongoing strategic planning process initiated by the network to strengthen its role as a key civil player in the protection and enhancement of the Argan Biosphere Reserve. The aim is to reinforce principles of participatory governance and sustainable development within the biosphere region. The gathering seeks to bolster the institutional and organizational capacities of the network and its members, activate the network's structures, and enhance its openness to regional, national, and international environments. Additionally, it aims to develop a regional action plan for the 2026-2030 period that translates strategic orientations into practical, executable projects.
Key Objectives and Strategic Areas
The agenda for the meeting included a series of informative and consultative sessions, which featured an opening ceremony, official speeches, a presentation of the network's strategic plan, and a consultative session dedicated to discussing the implementation of the action plan. Participants also explored partnership prospects with various stakeholders in the Argan Biosphere Reserve and the foundational elements of the strategic plan.
The strategic plan is built upon an integrated vision based on the outcomes of a participatory analysis. These results focus on enhancing the role of civil society in the protection of natural resources, supporting sustainable development within the Argan ecosystem, and fostering international recognition of the Argan Reserve as a human heritage site. Seven strategic intervention areas have been identified within the plan, including governance, capacity building, financial sustainability, advocacy, biodiversity conservation, communication, and cultural identity preservation.
This meeting is expected to serve as a practical milestone in launching a new dynamic within the network, driven by collective mobilization and the active engagement of various stakeholders. This approach aims to develop sustainable projects that address the challenges within the region, particularly in light of the environmental and climatic changes affecting the areas where the Argan tree thrives. The AMUSSU project aims to support the capacities of civil society organizations and enhance their contributions to environmental governance and regional development by accompanying local initiatives and developing multi-stakeholder partnerships within the Argan Biosphere Reserve.
The Argan Biosphere Reserve Network reaffirms its commitment to continue collaborative efforts with various partners to protect this unique environmental heritage and enhance its role as a lever for sustainable development benefiting the local population.
