Strengthening Maritime Cooperation: Morocco and Guinea Discuss Enhanced Fishing Partnerships

Morocco and Guinea Collaborate on Maritime Development

On April 22, 2026, a significant meeting took place in Rabat between Zakia Driouch, the Secretary of State for Fisheries, and Faso Thia, Guinea's Minister of Fisheries and Marine Economy. This meeting was attended by a high-level Guinean delegation and focused on enhancing cooperation in the field of fishing. The discussions were primarily centered around revitalizing the bilateral relations between Morocco and Guinea, aiming for a more dynamic partnership that fosters sustainable development.

During the meeting, Minister Thia emphasized the dual purpose of his visit, which not only seeks to strengthen bilateral cooperation but also aligns with Guinea's current presidency of the ministerial conference on fisheries cooperation among Atlantic African countries. He stressed the importance of revitalizing this conference, which includes 22 African nations, to bolster regional collaboration in fisheries and improve governance in this sector. Thia also expressed his appreciation for Morocco's experiences and advancements in the fishing industry, aiming to update and implement the existing bilateral cooperation agreement.

In her remarks, Driouch highlighted the historical ties between Morocco and Guinea, which have flourished for over two decades within the fisheries sector. She reiterated Morocco's commitment to fostering South-South cooperation based on a win-win partnership model. Both officials acknowledged their shared concerns regarding the sustainable management of marine resources, the development of a blue economy, and contributions to food security.

Both Driouch and Thia underscored the need to inject new momentum into their collaboration by steering it towards impactful projects, particularly in aquaculture, capacity building, enhancing seafood products, and improving value chains. They reaffirmed their joint commitment to elevating Moroccan-Guinean cooperation to new heights through an integrated and results-oriented approach that aims for tangible outcomes, contributing to the sustainability of marine resources and enhancing food security while creating job opportunities.

At the end of the meeting, the Guinean delegation visited the Fisheries Monitoring Center, where they explored the technologies used for tracking and monitoring fishing activities as well as the center's role in regulating and supervising the sector.
