Morocco and the UK Enhance Military Collaboration
In a significant development, Morocco and the United Kingdom are taking steps to bolster their military cooperation. On Tuesday, July 28, 2026, in Rabat, Abdellatif Loudiyi, the Minister Delegate to the Head of Government in charge of National Defense Administration, met with Vice Admiral Edward Ahlgren, the UK’s chief military advisor for the Middle East and North Africa. This meeting aimed to explore ways to further enhance security and military collaboration between the two nations.
The discussions, held under the high instructions of King Mohammed VI, the Supreme Commander and Chief of Staff of the Royal Armed Forces, also included the participation of the UK ambassador to Morocco. Both officials acknowledged the robust historical ties that bind Morocco and the UK, alongside the quality of their military cooperation. They reviewed notable achievements of their partnership, which includes the regular meetings of the joint military commission, high-level official visits, military training programs, and enhanced interoperability through joint military exercises.
Moreover, the talks highlighted the legal framework governing this cooperation, which is founded on the military and technical cooperation agreement signed in 1993, the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) concluded in 2013, and several technical arrangements. During the meeting, Loudiyi presented various South-South cooperation initiatives and regional integration efforts initiated by Morocco under the guidance of King Mohammed VI. He emphasized that these initiatives bolster Morocco's role as a key player in fostering stability and shared development across the African continent.
In response, the British military representative commended King Mohammed VI's leadership, asserting that Morocco plays a central role in promoting peace and stability, especially in the Middle East and North Africa region. At the conclusion of their discussions, both parties reaffirmed their mutual commitment to strengthening their partnership and enhancing bilateral military cooperation.
