Tangier's Tourist Appeal in 2026
The latest data from the Observatoire National du Tourisme (ONT) reveals that Tangier has solidified its reputation as the fourth most-visited tourist destination in Morocco during the first quarter of 2026. This vibrant city welcomed over 417,000 overnight stays from tourists between January and March, marking a notable year-over-year increase of approximately 11%. This impressive figure accounts for about 4% of all overnight stays recorded across the country, trailing only behind the leading destinations of Marrakech, Agadir, and Casablanca, which represent 34%, 20%, and 8% respectively.
Despite its strong performance, Tangier's classified hotels and other tourist accommodations reported an occupancy rate of around 47%, falling slightly below the national average of 52%. March alone saw around 133,000 overnight stays in Tangier, reflecting a significant 26% increase compared to the same month in the previous year, although the occupancy rate for that month was approximately 41%.
Regional Tourism Growth
In the broader Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, the total number of overnight stays reached approximately 654,000 by the end of March, demonstrating a 2% increase from the same period in 2025. This growth indicates that the region is becoming an increasingly attractive destination for tourists, accounting for nearly 7% of the total overnight stays recorded nationwide, with an average occupancy rate of 36%.
On a national scale, Morocco's classified tourist accommodation establishments reported nearly 9.85 million overnight stays during the first quarter of 2026, reflecting a robust 10% growth compared to the same timeframe in the previous year. Out of this total, international tourists contributed about 7.8 million overnight stays, while domestic tourists accounted for approximately 2.1 million. Such figures underscore the ongoing resurgence of the Moroccan tourism sector, highlighting Tangier's significant role within this dynamic landscape.
