Two Moroccan Women Expelled from the United States Return Home

Recently, a significant event occurred involving the return of Moroccan nationals who had faced expulsion from the United States. Among the group of seventeen individuals expelled, four have successfully returned to their home countries, which include Morocco, Angola, and Senegal. Notably, two Moroccan women were particularly concerned about their safety upon returning to Morocco, a sentiment that was recognized by the American judicial system. However, despite these concerns, they were ultimately compelled to return, and reports indicate that they are now living in hiding within Morocco, as stated by Joseph Awah Fru, a Cameroonian lawyer who monitored their arrival in Yaoundé.

In contrast, the other thirteen individuals who were also expelled are currently residing in Yaoundé, Cameroon, at a facility managed by local authorities in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM). These individuals have the option to apply for asylum in Cameroon if they choose to do so. This situation is part of a broader trend, as Cameroon has recently agreed to participate in a controversial American migration program designed to send irregular migrants to third countries, which also include Equatorial Guinea, Ghana, Rwanda, South Sudan, Eswatini, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

According to reports, this agreement between the United States and Cameroon involved a financial exchange, with Cameroon agreeing to accept these migrants in exchange for a payment of $30 million from Washington. Many of those expelled had previously been protected from deportation by U.S. law due to fears for their safety if returned to their countries of origin. Now, they find themselves sent to a third country, where they might eventually be returned to their homeland.

Human Rights Watch has criticized these expulsions, asserting that they violate international law and should be condemned. The complexities surrounding migration and the treatment of individuals seeking refuge are ongoing issues that continue to elicit debate and concern across the globe.
