VOX Calls Out EU's Complacency Amid Moroccan Threats
On April 21, 2026, VOX, a prominent Spanish political party, raised a formal complaint in the European Parliament regarding what they termed the "absolute dereliction of duty" by the European Commission in response to Morocco's aggressive maneuvers against Spain's interests. The party's leader in the European delegation, Jorge Buxadé, pointed out that while negotiations with Morocco are ongoing, the Commission not only refrains from criticizing Morocco's actions but also endorses its strategic role without demanding any concessions in return.
This denunciation comes at a time when Morocco has been increasing pressure on Spain, particularly through a trade blockade affecting the cities of Ceuta and Melilla, thereby choking Spanish businesses and violating existing bilateral agreements. In addition to these economic sanctions, there has been a staggering 479% rise in illegal immigration attempts at the land borders, further straining Spain's resources and security.
Concerns Over Sovereignty and EU Dynamics
VOX highlights that Morocco has also unilaterally expanded its Exclusive Economic Zone, encroaching into Spanish waters near the Canary Islands, an act they describe as "a direct aggression to national sovereignty." Despite this escalation, the party criticizes Brussels for maintaining a stance of "political subservience". VOX interprets the European Commission's public praise of Morocco and its willingness to enhance cooperation across various sectors as a failure to uphold Spain's national interests.
Buxadé expressed his deep concern, stating that such an attitude represents a "total abandonment" of Spanish citizens. He firmly asserted, "Brussels cannot continue to reward those who weaponize illegal immigration, block our commercial borders, and invade our waters. This is not cooperation; it is surrender." The party warns that the European Union's foreign policy is jeopardizing Spain's territorial integrity, security, and economy, while the government led by Pedro Sánchez remains silent and submissive to Moroccan demands.
Consequently, VOX demands an immediate shift in the EU's stance, advocating for active defense of Ceuta, Melilla, and the Canary Islands, strict adherence to international agreements, and an end to preferential treatment towards Morocco. Buxadé made it clear, stating, "One cannot consider as an ally someone who systematically attacks Spain. Europe must choose: defend its member states or become complicit with those who weaken them."
