Luis Aracama's Remarkable Achievements in Classical Music
In an impressive display of talent and dedication, 20-year-old cellist Luis Aracama has secured the Second Prize at the 22nd International Cello Competition organized by the Philharmonic Orchestra of Morocco. This prestigious competition, which attracted 83 cellists from around the globe, awards a substantial monetary prize of €10,000 to its winners. Not only did Aracama earn the coveted Second Prize, but he also claimed the Audience Prize worth €3,000 and the Orchestra Prize, which is valued at €2,000. These accolades underscore his exceptional performance and the high regard in which he is held by both the audience and the judges.
The semifinals of the competition took place on March 30 and 31 in Casablanca, where only six finalists advanced to this stage. Each semifinalist showcased their skills by performing a classical concerto alongside the orchestra, along with a solo cello piece of their choice. The final round was conducted on April 3 at the historic Mohamed V Theater in Morocco, where the three finalists delivered stunning performances of large-scale concertos with the orchestra.
The esteemed jury, chaired by renowned cellist Ophélie Gaillard, included distinguished members such as Xenia Jankovic, Justus Grimm, Marie Hallynck, René Benedetti, Yovan Markovitch, and Ahmed Essyad, all of whom contributed to the rigorous selection process that highlighted the immense talent present at the competition.
A Rising Star in the World of Classical Music
Luis Aracama is no stranger to accolades, having previously won first prizes at various prestigious contests, including the Justus Dotzauer International Cello Competition, the Jaime Dobato Benavente International Cello Competition, and the Antonio Janigro Competition in Poreč, Croatia, among others. Since 2018, he has been further honing his skills at the Aline Foriel-Destezet Chair of Cello at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Madrid and has been a scholar at the Liechtenstein Academy of Music since 2019.
In addition to his competition successes, Aracama has recently released his debut album, where he performs Vivaldi's Double Concerto alongside Laura Núñez and the Ponferrada Classical Camerata. His artistry has also led to his selection for the prestigious Verbier Festival Academy in 2025, a testament to his growing reputation in the classical music scene.
