Call for Investigation into Temporary Workers in Fes Municipality

Concerns Raised Over Employment Practices in Fes

The issue of temporary workers in the city of Fes has resurfaced, drawing significant attention and sparking heated debate among local activists. Accusations have been leveled against the municipality and city council, alleging that they have employed individuals who are connected to influential figures and others who lack any relevant experience. Despite their questionable qualifications, these individuals reportedly receive regular salaries while engaging in other parallel activities.

According to circulating information, the municipality reportedly allocates a budget of approximately 20 million dirhams annually for about 1,000 temporary workers. However, what raises eyebrows is the suspicion that certain individuals are benefiting from monthly compensation without undertaking any actual work duties, including those associated with community organizations or close allies of officials.

In response to these concerns, municipal councilor Ali Lakssab has submitted a complaint to Wali Khalid Ait Taleb, seeking an investigation into how the lists of temporary workers are managed. The complaint calls for a thorough audit of the compensations provided, as well as a verification of the names of beneficiaries against declarations submitted to the National Social Security Fund to determine if there are so-called "ghost workers" among them.

Lakssab clarified that his intention is not to target those temporary workers who are performing their duties effectively, but rather to address individuals who receive compensation without providing any service in return. He raised concerns about nepotism, favoritism, and the exploitation of this system for political gain, emphasizing the necessity for an investigation to uncover the fate of funds that certain individuals are receiving unjustly.

Previous reports have highlighted discrepancies in managing temporary workers across various municipalities in different cities, including instances of ghost employees. For example, there were similar issues noted in Rabat, prompting the Ministry of Interior to call for a reassessment of needs and budgets before resorting to temporary hiring.
