Increased Air Traffic to Marrakech, Morocco
The EuroAirport, an international airport located in Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg, is set to boost its flight frequencies to Marrakech, Morocco, for the upcoming winter season of 2026-2027. This season is scheduled to run from October 25, 2026, to March 27, 2027, and will feature a comprehensive program that includes 89 direct connections provided by twenty airlines across 31 countries. Marrakech stands out as one of the seven destinations that will see an increase in flight operations, alongside Amsterdam (Netherlands), Bucharest (Romania), Lisbon (Portugal), Porto (Portugal), Pristina (Kosovo), and Skopje (North Macedonia). This emphasis on Marrakech highlights its significance within the winter offerings of an airport that simultaneously serves the French, Swiss, and German markets, situated at the heart of the Rhine basin.
In an official statement detailing the winter schedule, the airport confirmed this increase in frequencies. Currently, Marrakech enjoys regular services operated by easyJet, which provided flights to the Moroccan city throughout the summer of 2026, as per the program released in March. The new winter arrangements will build upon these existing services, although specifics regarding the exact number of additional flights and their distribution among carriers are still to be clarified in a statement expected on October 21.
Five Moroccan Cities Connected
Morocco has a significant presence in EuroAirport's network, with five key cities included in the official destination program: Marrakech, Agadir, Casablanca, Rabat, and Tangier. These cities are featured in both the summer and winter schedules, ensuring that Moroccan destinations are accessible year-round. This geographical distribution enables the airport to cater to various regions of the kingdom. Marrakech and Agadir are prominent tourist hubs, while Casablanca is a major economic center, Tangier serves the northern part of the country, and Rabat provides direct access to the capital. The flights cater to diverse needs, including leisure trips, business travel, and family visits.
EuroAirport's unique geographical positioning makes it a standout player in the European aviation market. Located on French territory, close to Basel (Switzerland) and Freiburg (Germany), it operates under a binational Franco-Swiss status and serves a region that spans three countries. Its customer base primarily includes residents from the northwestern cantons of Switzerland, southern Alsace, and parts of Baden-Württemberg.
For Marrakech, the increase in flight frequencies will expand travel options from this cross-border area during the winter months and will complement the services to other Moroccan cities, allowing travelers to access multiple regions of the kingdom directly.
The winter program announced by EuroAirport comprises 89 direct routes across 31 countries, mainly in Europe and the Mediterranean basin, with twenty airlines participating in operations from October 25, 2026, to March 27, 2027. Additionally, the modifications will include the opening or resumption of three new destinations: Poznań (Poland) will receive three weekly flights; Varna (Bulgaria) will have two; and Yerevan (Armenia) will also benefit from three. The airport is also set to welcome Wizz Air on the route to Pristina, which is already operated by easyJet, GP Aviation, and Chair Airlines, with the Hungarian airline adding Naples (Italy) to its network in March 2027.
Moreover, EuroAirport offers international connections through several major European airlines. Air France serves Paris (France), Austrian Airlines connects to Vienna (Austria), British Airways flies to London (UK), KLM operates to Amsterdam, and Lufthansa provides services to Frankfurt and Munich (Germany). Connections are also available through airlines serving Istanbul (Turkey) and Barcelona (Spain).
In parallel, the airport is preparing an expansion of its boarding facilities. Starting in 2027, areas in the southern part of the terminal will undergo renovations aimed at increasing capacity and improving passenger flow. This project is expected to be completed by spring 2028 and is part of a larger investment program totaling €600 million, approximately 6.49 billion dirhams, planned over a seven-year period. The initiative encompasses the airport's infrastructure as a whole and aligns with the anticipated growth of its operations.
The operator has also revealed preliminary changes planned for summer 2027, including the introduction of Air Canada on a direct route to Montreal (Canada). From June 17, the Canadian airline plans to operate four weekly flights using the Airbus A321XLR, supplementing the service already provided by Air Transat.
