Morocco's Vision for High-Speed Rail Expansion
The Moroccan government has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding the high-speed rail network to Agadir, with significant investments planned between 2030 and 2035. In a recent session of the Parliament, the government outlined its goals, promising to initiate construction that will also connect Essaouira to this ambitious rail network. This expansion is part of a broader investment strategy aimed at enhancing the country's transportation infrastructure and mobility.
The plan includes the development of a new railway line linking Oued Zem to Béni Mellal via Boujaâd, with a branch serving Fquih Ben Salah. This initiative will not only improve connectivity but will also involve rehabilitating the existing Casablanca-Khouribga-Oued Zem line, ensuring that the region is well-integrated into the national rail system.
Comprehensive Railway Development Initiatives
Complementing these efforts, the government has announced further projects for the 2030-2035 period, which include the doubling and modernization of the 140-kilometer rail line between Benguerir and Safi, as well as enhancing the capacity of the Fès-Oujda corridor. These upgrades are part of a larger ongoing railway investment program, which has been allocated 134 billion dirhams for the 2024-2030 period, aimed at accelerating the development of Morocco's railways.
Among the notable projects in this investment plan are the extension of the high-speed line from Kénitra to Marrakech, the establishment of regional express networks in various regions, and the electrification of the Fès-Oujda line. Additionally, the government plans to complete the railway connection to the Nador West Med port, which will significantly enhance trade and travel efficiency.
With these developments, Morocco is not only preparing to improve regional connectivity and economic integration but is also gearing up to host major international events, thereby positioning itself as a key player in the global transportation network.
