Agadir Sees Major Investment with 76.7 MDH for Abaraz Tunnel Construction

Significant Infrastructure Development in Agadir

The city of Agadir, located on Morocco's stunning Atlantic coast, is witnessing a major boost in its infrastructure with the initiation of the Abaraz tunnel construction project. This ambitious endeavor is estimated to cost 76.7 million dirhams (MDH) and is part of a broader strategy aimed at enhancing urban development in the region. The Abaraz tunnel is set to improve traffic flow towards the port by providing a crucial connection from the North-East bypass road. The total investment for upgrading the city’s port complex is a staggering 481.8 MDH, showcasing the commitment to modernizing Agadir's transportation network.

Details of the Abaraz Tunnel Project

The construction contract for the Abaraz tunnel was recently awarded to the SSMT-Atlas Handassa consortium. This project marks the addition of Agadir's fourth tunnel and is integral to the urban development program for the city, spanning from 2020 to 2024. Initially estimated at 88 MDH, the project faced delays due to the tendering process, but completion is now anticipated within 14 months, aiming for delivery by the end of 2027.

In conjunction with the tunnel, the ongoing improvements include the development of a third access point to the port, designed to accommodate increasing traffic volumes, especially from heavy vehicles. The port has already seen a significant increase in activity, with total traffic reaching 7.5 million tons in 2025, reflecting a 9.3% growth. To address future demands, the National Ports Agency (ANP) is actively working on this third access, which has received an investment of 27.68 MDH for essential infrastructure upgrades.

This project is part of a series of enhancements that include the construction of a fence for the new access point, an architectural study for the necessary superstructures, and updates to the traffic management scheme within the port. Overall, the port's modernization will require a total of 481.8 MDH, with funding split between the ANP and the Souss-Massa Regional Council.

In addition to these developments, there are plans to extend the North-East bypass further north towards Taghazout, which is currently under a geotechnical study phase. This extension is expected to significantly improve accessibility to major tourist hubs in the area, including Taghazout, Imi Ouaddar, Aghroud, and Imsouane, thus bolstering the appeal of the Atlantic coastline in the Souss-Massa region.
