Morocco-Israel Defense Negotiations: A Potential Shift in Regional Security

Morocco and Israel's Defense Collaboration: Enhancing Security Capabilities

Morocco and Israel are currently engaged in advanced negotiations concerning the acquisition of the David's Sling air defense system, a crucial component of Israel's missile defense shield. Developed collaboratively by the Israeli company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and the American firm Raytheon, this cutting-edge system is designed to intercept tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, large-caliber rockets, and swarms of drones at ranges between 40 and 300 kilometers. This potential purchase marks a significant step in Morocco's efforts to bolster its military capabilities and enhance regional security.

This prospective acquisition adds to the array of Israeli defense systems that Morocco already operates or has integrated, such as the Barak MX and Spyder systems. The introduction of the David's Sling would contribute to a multi-layered air defense architecture for the kingdom. However, this operation is subject to approval from the United States, given the American components involved in the system and the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program. Such approval is regarded as likely due to the solid diplomatic relations currently enjoyed between Washington and Rabat, as noted by the German defense magazine Europäische Sicherheit & Technik, with similar reports emerging from Morocco World News and Military Watch Magazine.

The interest in acquiring the David's Sling comes shortly after Morocco's expressed desire to procure precision ballistic missiles known as LORA, manufactured by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). These missiles have an official range of between 90 to 430 kilometers, with some estimates suggesting they could reach up to 500 kilometers, featuring a precision margin of about 10 meters and the ability to carry explosive payloads ranging from 400 to 600 kilograms. If deployed from Moroccan territory, these missiles could potentially reach the Canary Islands, situated just over 100 km off the African coast at their closest point, as well as southern regions of the Iberian Peninsula, including cities like Seville, Murcia, or Ciudad Real, and even targets in Algeria.

The discussions surrounding both defense systems have intensified around the Marrakech Air Show, reflecting the strengthening military cooperation between Rabat and Jerusalem since the Abraham Accords. Israel has emerged as one of Morocco's primary arms suppliers, second only to the United States, while Morocco maintains one of the highest defense budgets in Africa. Although no official contracts have been announced, and specifics regarding quantities or timelines remain undisclosed, reports from specialized Israeli, Moroccan, and European media outlets indicate that negotiations have progressed beyond preliminary phases. The potential integration of these capabilities—both defensive (David's Sling) and long-range offensive (LORA)—significantly enhances the modernization efforts of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces, drawing attention in Spain due to the geographic proximity of the Canary Islands and sovereign territories.
