Marrakech Authorities Take Action to Clear Public Spaces
In a decisive move to reclaim and liberate public property, local authorities in Marrakech initiated a comprehensive field operation from midnight to 5 a.m. on Saturday, October 10, 2026. The campaign specifically targeted the Al-Hassani neighborhood within the Menara district, addressing issues related to unauthorized occupation of public spaces.
This initiative was overseen by the acting mayor of Al-Hassani, alongside the head of the administrative district and the local administrative leader, supported by local authority members and auxiliary forces. The operation was bolstered by logistics, including trucks and other equipment to facilitate the removal of illegal structures and items.
The field interventions focused on cafes, retail shops, and vendors who were unlawfully utilizing sidewalks and roadways. As a result of this operation, authorities confiscated 64 hand-pulled carts, 102 tables intended for displaying fruits and goods, and 85 metal chairs, in addition to 30 tables and chairs belonging to various cafes and shops.
Furthermore, the campaign involved the removal of 13 unauthorized horizontal awnings ('tanf') that were affixed to shop roofs and façades, alongside the confiscation of 72 used tires that were hindering parking spaces and occupying sidewalks.
This series of interventions is part of broader regulatory efforts aimed at eliminating chaotic encroachments, ensuring smooth traffic flow, and safeguarding pedestrian movement. The local authorities are committed to upholding the regulations governing the use of public spaces, thereby enhancing the urban environment for all residents and visitors.
