Morocco is setting ambitious goals for its water management and infrastructure development, with plans to increase its total dam storage capacity to over 24 billion cubic meters by the end of 2027. This initiative is part of a broader strategy outlined in the explanatory memorandum accompanying the country's draft Finance Bill for the year 2027. Since the year 2020, Morocco has successfully completed the construction of eight significant dams, which have collectively added approximately 1.89 billion cubic meters to its storage capacity. In addition, five more dams have commenced early filling, contributing an additional 746 million cubic meters to this total, thereby enhancing the nation's water resources.
The ongoing construction efforts include 14 major dams and the initiation of six medium-sized facilities, with plans for another major dam and the expansion of an existing one set for 2027. Furthermore, the 2022-2027 program, which encompasses 155 small and hillside dams, has already seen the completion of 24 of these projects, while 32 others are currently under construction. This ambitious program reflects Morocco's commitment to sustainable water management and infrastructure enhancement.
Between 2020 and 2025, Morocco has undertaken the drilling of 5,059 exploratory boreholes to assess the potential of its groundwater resources, a critical aspect of the country's water security strategy. Additionally, significant water transfer projects are underway, including the connection between the Oued El Makhazine and Dar Khrofa dams, which aims to secure a reliable drinking water supply for the city of Tangier. A separate transfer system, the Sebou-Bouregreg system, is designed to support the water needs of Morocco's major cities, including Rabat and Casablanca.
In tandem with these infrastructural developments, the Moroccan government is also working on real-time water quality monitoring systems and is in the process of reviewing regulations that govern the allocation of water from dams. These efforts underscore the nation's proactive approach to enhancing water security and ensuring the sustainable management of its vital water resources.
