Morocco and African Development Bank Sign €270 Million Agreement to Enhance Airport Infrastructure

Strengthening Morocco's Airport Infrastructure

On Tuesday, Morocco and the African Development Bank (AfDB) signed a significant financing agreement in Casablanca, amounting to €270 million aimed at expanding and modernizing airport infrastructure throughout the kingdom. This initiative is designed to bolster the capabilities of Morocco's airports and ensure they meet the growing demands of international travel.

During a ceremony led by AfDB President Sidy Souleymane Elhadi and Morocco's Minister of Economy and Finance, Nadia Fettah, the agreement was officially signed by the AfDB's Regional Director for Morocco, Ashraf Tarsim, and the Director General of the National Airports Office, Adil Faqir. According to a statement released by the AfDB, the funding will support Morocco’s ambition to upgrade its airport facilities, particularly in strategic hubs such as Marrakech, Agadir, Fez, and Tangier. This will also assist Morocco in preparing for significant international events in the near future.

Vision for a Modern Air Transport Sector

The signing of this agreement represents a pivotal step in the transformation of Morocco's airport sector, aligning perfectly with the kingdom's aspirations to position itself as a leading air transport hub connecting Africa with Europe and the rest of the world. The project is also in harmony with the four main pillars and operational vision of the AfDB, as well as Morocco’s strategic priorities, supporting the country’s tourism vision for 2030.

The program focused on expanding and modernizing airport infrastructure aims to enhance the competitiveness of Moroccan air transport sustainably. It will facilitate the upgrading and expansion of the country's major airports, thereby increasing their operational capacities through improved infrastructure, enhanced air navigation systems, and strengthened safety and security measures. These investments will introduce next-generation safety equipment, automated baggage handling systems, and digital solutions designed to streamline the travel experience and improve passenger satisfaction.

As passenger and cargo traffic continues to grow in the coming years, this project will prepare Moroccan airport infrastructure to meet the kingdom's future mobility and air connectivity needs. By 2030, the program aims to increase airport capacity to accommodate 14 million passengers in Marrakech, five million in Agadir, 3.6 million in Tangier, and three million in Fez. These investments will further enhance Morocco's status as a regional air transport hub.

In addition to modernizing infrastructure, the program is expected to yield significant economic and social returns. In the short term, it will enhance operational safety at airports and create thousands of job opportunities, particularly for youth and women. In the medium term, it will contribute to the development of tourism, trade, and logistics activities, while also stimulating both public and private investments related to the air transport sector.
